Healthy Homes Taranaki is a collaborative partnership between the Energy Efficiency and
Conservation Authority (EECA), the Taranaki Electricity Trust, the TSB Community Trust, Housing
New Zealand Corporation, the New Plymouth District Council, the Accident Compensation
Corporation (ACC), Pinnacle Taranaki Primary Healthy Organisation, the Ministry of Social
Development through Work and Income New Zealand, and the Taranaki District Health Board.
The first of its kind, the partnership has been working hard since 2004 to develop a multi-agency,
holistic approach to ensure all homes in Taranaki are healthy, safe and energy efficient, and thereby
support their inhabitants to achieve good health, provide the opportunity for barriers to be overcome
and talents to be realised.

The vision for the Healthy Homes project is for “all homes in Taranaki to have a healthy and safe
environment by 2014”. This will mean living environments that are warmer, drier, safer – and cost less to
heat for thousands of Taranaki homes built before the 1978 Building Act came into effect.
| This project is primarily aimed at: |
| - |
All dwellings built before 1978 |
| - |
People with health needs (such as respiratory conditions) which are being affected by their cold,
damp home |
| - |
People on limited and low incomes |
| - |
Individuals, families (particularly those with young children), the elderly, landlords and tenants |
It’s a coordinated project by a number of central and local government and non-government agencies to
ensure we, and our families, live and grow up in healthy homes.
These agencies are working together to provide insulation “retro-fitting” for homes with up to 100% of the Retro-fit cost being subsidised depending upon the financial and health situation of the occupants - and
the age of the property.
Each home that has been retro-fitted to bring it as close as practicable to the requirements of the current
Building Act will be registered on the relevant District Council’s individual property files. A registered
Healthy Home is a valuable asset for property investors and landlords – and is a warmer, dryer and
healthier home to live in for owners and tenants.
